Violent Clashes Erupt in Tripoli Following Militia Leader Assassination

On May 12, 2025, Tripoli, the capital of Libya, was plunged into chaos following the assassination of Abdul Ghani al-Kikli, the commander of the Stability Support Apparatus (SSA). The incident occurred during a meeting aimed at de-escalating tensions among armed factions. In the aftermath, the 444th Infantry Brigade launched attacks on SSA positions across the city, seizing assets and detaining numerous SSA fighters.

The violence escalated rapidly, with intense clashes reported in densely populated neighborhoods, including Ras Hassan and Abu Salim. Key infrastructures, such as Tripoli’s seaport and the al-Jadida prison, came under attack, leading to the escape of several inmates. The unrest prompted the suspension of flights at Mitiga International Airport and the closure of schools, leaving the city in a state of lockdown

In response to the deteriorating situation, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and various embassies, including those of the U.S. and Turkey, issued urgent calls for calm and advised civilians to remain indoors. The Government of National Unity (GNU) has declared a state of emergency and is working to restore order.

This outbreak of violence underscores the fragile security landscape in Libya and raises concerns about the potential for prolonged conflict in the region.
